Cindy Sheehan was ill-served by Woolsey in that Woolsey was quoted as saying that her getting Cindy a seat was "not political". Why not say something like "If this be treason, make the most of it." We are almost unworthy of our forefathers, who called a spade a spade.

The fact that the Capitol police had to get out the report that the arrest was due to unfurling a banner, the fact that this traveled like a virus into American homes to save the President's good reputation for as long as his miserably inadequate speech, shows the desperation of the powerful at this moment.

But power is always desperate before a stronger reality.The thing speaks for itself: spreading "democracy" to the Middleast on the backs of our National Guard and military services is an unmitigated disaster.

The sacrifices of coalition forces have been unequal too - only yesterday, Britons protested at their war dead, but the number is much smaller than ours: 100. Cindy Sheehan's shirt spelled out ours. The plane carrying the Bob Woodruff and his cameraman spelled out another toll: dozens of wounded soldiers accompanied the reporters. It is the most grievously wounded which are airlifted out.

Sheehan has a persistence which is threatening. Should she be taken out of the picture by felony arrest or other means, someone else would, like Spartacus, rise to occupy the same place.

The suffragists at the turn of the nineteenth century embarrassed the powerful in their quest for womens' rights. A glance at the body of lawmakers in the Capitol shows that they succeeded. Martin Luther King succeeded. Sheehan and her ilk will prevail.
