After my hospital stays, I had to move home at 31 with my mum and dad. I lost my teaching career, I had to move everything home, and I had to build my life back up.

I just wanted to connect to the world again. I found it difficult. I started going back out in the community and couldn't cope. I struggled in crowds, with flickering lights in shopping centres, music was too loud.

When my relatives visited from overseas after I came home, my sister and I took my cousins to the zoo, and I just couldn't cope. My legs were shaking, I couldn't control my body. I had to wait in the car until they were done.

I don't like talking about psychiatric wards as being a jail, but you do lose your liberties when you're forced to be there.

Coming back out into the world, I kind of felt like I'd been in jail and was having to try to earn and manage my money, do basic things like buy groceries.
