 The next two days passed in a blur. All my friends had been stunned I’d shunned a huge wedding in favour of a registry office, just two close friends as witnesses.

It sounds strange for a woman who loves being glamorous, but the day he proposed and I accepted, I knew I wanted our special day to be private. That was a sign to me that he was The One.

I didn’t need the big dress – only my vintage citrine chandelier ring was extravagant. On the eve of my fortieth birthday, after a bumpy ride in life, which you’ll learn about in these columns, I was ready for my happy ever after.

In keeping with our low-key theme, we’d arranged to meet at the venue after he’d dropped the girls off with their mum so we’d have the house to ourselves for a private honeymoon night.

I’d arrived and had one eye on the door looking for him when my phone beeped.

I looked down to see four little words which were about to destroy my dreams.

“I can’t do it,” was all it said.

Suddenly my legs went from under me as everything went black...
